Annual Celebration
Planning for our 2008 Annual Celebration is underway! If you’ve participated in the past, you know that this is a fun way to network, raise funds to support Center’s efforts to increase accessibility to and preserve homeownership opportunities in DuPage County and honor this year’s winner of the Robert Christ Affordable Housing Award.
The date for this special event is Wednesday, June 4, and it will be held at Abbington Banquets in Glen Ellyn. You will be hearing more about this, but in the meantime, we are looking for prizes for this special event. Sports tickets, golf packages, restaurant and/or hotel packages, etc. are highly appreciated. Contact Sheila if you can help with this effort.
16 th Annual Homeownership Fair Report
Forty-six organizations exhibited at the 2008 Fair. Attendance figures show 163 unduplicated households (mom, dad and children = 1) registered, up 16% from last year, despite the severe downturn in the market. We tried a couple of new things this year, such as offering a Foreclosure Prevention workshop and the 4-hour Home Buyer Education class which may have impacted the numbers. Response from exhibitors was very positive, especially about the new location at the DuPage County Administration Building.
A Fair report, marketing list and exhibitor survey was sent to the contact person on the Exhibitor Purchase Order form. If you did not receive this report, let us know and we’ll send another—it’s important for you to know who was there and it’s important to us to know your feedback. We realize that in some cases, this is not the same person who manned a booth at the Fair. If that is the case, we would appreciate any constructive suggestions for improvement that we can review when planning next year’s Fair. One of the suggestions offered was to have a more diverse group of exhibitors, such as the Home Depot, Lowe’s, moving and storage facilities, etc. Do you agree? If you do business with an organization that you think may be interested in marketing their services to our audience, c ontact Sheila at (630) 260-2500 or Sheila@dhoc.org and we’ll put them on a list to receive an invitation for next year’s Fair.
Marketing efforts included a schedule of paid and sponsored ads in the Daily Herald, Chicago Tribune and Homes.Com along with some Internet advertising. Dru was interviewed on WTMX and on Channel 7 news. Additionally, attendees heard about the Fair through flyers that were distributed to a variety of churches, libraries, social service organizations, government groups, customers/clients of exhibitors and links on exhibitor and partner websites. This collaborative effort of community leaders, Realtors, developers, employers, government officials and the nonprofit community is working to expand the availability of affordable starter homes across DuPage County. In an effort to build the political will and encourage advocacy of affordable housing, a slide presentation has been developed, explaining:
- What affordable housing is and is not,
- The current mismatch between income and housing costs in DuPage,
- The factors which led to the current mismatch,
- The economic and social consequences of continuing on our present course, and
- A variety of methods used locally and around the nation to increase the supply of affordable starter homes.
The Community Outreach Speakers Bureau is looking for opportunities to bring this program to churches, service clubs, or other group. For more information, or to schedule a speaker for your group, please contact Sheila at (630) 260-2507 or Sheila@dhoc.org.
